EXPO 2027 Belgrade: Serbia’s Biggest International Project Is Taking Shape

As preparations continue across the Serbian capital, EXPO 2027 is rapidly becoming one of the most ambitious projects in the country’s modern history. Scheduled to take place in Belgrade from May 15 to August 15, 2027, the event is expected to bring together more than 130 countries, millions of visitors, and thousands of cultural, business, and educational events. 

With less than a year remaining until the opening, 2026 has been filled with major developments, construction milestones, and growing international interest in what will be the first specialized world exposition ever hosted in Southeast Europe. 

Record International Participation

One of the biggest stories surrounding EXPO 2027 this year has been the growing number of participating countries.

During international planning meetings held in Belgrade throughout 2026, organizers reported that more than 130 countries had already confirmed their participation, placing Belgrade on track to host one of the largest specialized expos in history. Representatives from around the world gathered in Serbia to discuss pavilion designs, logistics, and preparations for the global event. 

Officials believe the final number of participants could approach 140 countries, setting new records for a specialized exposition. 

Massive Construction Underway

The area around Surčin has transformed into one of the largest construction sites in Serbia.

The EXPO complex includes international pavilions, exhibition halls, public spaces, roads, utilities, and supporting infrastructure designed to accommodate millions of visitors. Construction has continued throughout 2026, with Serbian authorities repeatedly stating that the project remains on schedule. 

International inspectors from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) visited the site earlier this year and reported visible progress across the future exhibition grounds. Organizers announced that pavilion spaces for participating countries are expected to be ready for handover by the end of 2026. 

A New Part of Belgrade Is Emerging

EXPO 2027 is not just about a three-month exhibition.

The project includes long-term investments that are expected to reshape parts of Belgrade for decades. New roads, transportation connections, public facilities, and urban infrastructure are being developed around the exhibition area.

The wider master plan includes the new National Stadium, transportation improvements, public spaces, and additional facilities designed to serve both visitors and local residents after the event concludes. 

Government officials describe EXPO as a catalyst for modernization and economic development that extends well beyond the exhibition itself.

According to official projections, EXPO 2027 could attract more than six million visits during its 93-day run.

Organizers expect visitors from every continent, creating an unprecedented opportunity for Serbia to showcase its culture, economy, tourism, innovation, and hospitality on a global stage. More than 8,000 events are planned, ranging from business forums and scientific conferences to cultural performances and educational programs. 

Hotels, restaurants, transportation providers, and tourism businesses throughout Serbia are already preparing for the expected influx of international guests. Many experts believe the event could significantly boost tourism and international visibility for years after 2027. 

The Theme: “Play for Humanity”

Unlike traditional trade fairs, EXPO 2027 will revolve around a central theme: “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All.”

The concept aims to explore how play, creativity, sports, music, and human interaction can contribute to innovation, education, and social development. Organizers hope the theme will encourage participation from governments, companies, researchers, artists, and young people worldwide. 

Economic Impact

The economic significance of EXPO 2027 continues to be one of the most discussed topics in Serbia.

Large-scale investments connected to the event have already stimulated activity in construction, transportation, hospitality, and infrastructure development. Industry analysts note that non-residential construction in Serbia has entered a new growth phase largely driven by EXPO-related projects. 

Supporters argue that the event will create jobs, attract foreign investment, and strengthen Serbia’s position as a regional business hub. Critics have questioned costs and transparency surrounding some projects, leading to ongoing public debate.
