Serbia continues to grow as one of Switzerland’s most important economic partners in the Balkan region, with both countries working to expand cooperation across multiple sectors including innovation, education, and industry.

During the recent visit to Belgrade, Swiss President Guy Parmelin emphasized Switzerland’s readiness to support Serbia in further developing its dual education system — a model that combines practical work experience with formal education.

He highlighted the success of this approach in Switzerland and suggested organizing a visit for Serbian representatives to see firsthand how the system operates in Swiss companies, research institutions, and industrial sectors.

Parmelin pointed out that dual education has proven to be highly effective, even referencing his own career as an example of how the system helps develop skilled professionals and leaders.

Focus on Innovation and Business Cooperation

A key highlight of the visit was the signing of a bilateral agreement on innovation, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement is expected to:

  • Encourage partnerships between companies
  • Support development of new technologies
  • Accelerate the commercialization of products and services
  • Improve overall business collaboration

Swiss officials also stressed that a stable business environment is crucial for attracting investments, including:

  • Legal security
  • Predictable regulations
  • Fair competition
  • Transparent public procurement

These factors, they noted, play a major role in building trust and encouraging international companies to invest.

Future Sectors of Growth

Looking ahead, several industries have been identified as having strong potential for deeper cooperation between Serbia and Switzerland:

  • Construction
  • Transport and infrastructure
  • Healthcare
  • Innovation and technology

These sectors are expected to drive future investments and economic growth in the region.

Expanding Dialogue on Key Issues

In addition to economic topics, Switzerland has proposed opening a bilateral dialogue on human rights with Serbia.

Such discussions are already part of Switzerland’s cooperation with other major countries and aim to promote open communication, mutual understanding, and transparency.

The goal is to address challenges through constructive dialogue and strengthen long-term relations.

Strong Regional Investment

Switzerland has invested more than 3 billion euros in the Western Balkans through international cooperation programs, contributing to improvements in security, governance, and democratic institutions across the region.

Officials noted that while progress has been made, ongoing support and dialogue remain essential for continued development and stability.

A Growing Partnership

The visit confirmed that Serbia is not only an important economic partner for Switzerland but also a country with strong potential for future cooperation.

With expanding investments, innovation agreements, and shared interests, Serbia is strengthening its position as a key player in the Balkan region.

“Serbia continues to strengthen its role as a key economic partner in Southeast Europe.”
