Serbia is hosting an important diplomatic visit as the President of Switzerland, Guy Parmelin, arrives in Belgrade for a two-day official stay — marking the first visit of its kind in nearly two decades. Serbian officials welcomed the visit as a significant step forward in strengthening relations between the two countries. The meeting is expected to open new opportunities for political dialogue, economic cooperation, and long-term partnership. The visit comes at an important moment, as Serbia and Switzerland continue to build strong ties across multiple sectors, including business, innovation, and sustainable development. Focus on Future Cooperation According to officials, one of the key goals of the visit is to launch a new cooperation strategy for the period 2026–2029. This program is expected to include projects in: Economic development Governance and public administration Green transition and sustainability Innovation and technology The Swiss President is accompanied by a high-level business delegation, highlighting Switzerland’s growing interest in Serbia as an important partner in the Western Balkans. Strong Economic and Political Ties Switzerland already has a strong presence in Serbia, with over 600 Swiss companies operating in the country. These businesses contribute significantly to employment, investment, and economic growth. The two countries also cooperate closely through international financial institutions such as: The World Bank The International Monetary Fund (IMF) The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) In addition, Serbia and Switzerland have maintained a migration partnership agreement for more than 15 years. Celebrating 110 Years of Relations This visit is especially symbolic as it coincides with the 110th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Switzerland. The long-standing partnership dates back to World War I, when Switzerland played an important role in maintaining diplomatic presence for Serbia during difficult times.
