A new exhibition in Belgrade is offering visitors a fascinating look at the long and complex relationship between Serbia and the United States, highlighting 145 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Opened at the National Library of Serbia, the exhibition brings together historical documents, diplomatic correspondence, photographs, and testimonies that showcase some of the most important moments in Serbian-American relations. Titled “From Alliance to Partnership”, the exhibition traces the evolution of relations between the two nations from the late 19th century to the present day. According to organizers, the goal is not only to present political history but also to emphasize the cultural, economic, and human connections that have linked Serbia and the United States for generations. A Relationship Dating Back to the 1880s Official diplomatic relations between Serbia and the United States began in 1881 through a trade agreement, followed shortly by the arrival of the first American representative in Belgrade. At a time when communication between Europe and America could take weeks, both countries recognized the importance of establishing formal relations. Over the decades, those ties expanded through diplomacy, trade, education, and cultural exchange. Serbian immigrants built communities across the United States, while American influence became increasingly visible throughout Serbia. Today, more than one million Americans are estimated to have Serbian roots, creating strong people-to-people connections that continue to shape relations between the two countries. Allies During Difficult Times One of the strongest chapters in Serbian-American history came during World War I. The United States publicly supported Serbia after the outbreak of the war, and the two nations found themselves on the same side of history during one of Europe’s darkest periods. Perhaps one of the most symbolic moments occurred in 1918, when the Serbian flag was raised above the White House in Washington, D.C. as a sign of solidarity with Serbia and its people. Historians often point to this event as a powerful symbol of friendship between the two nations. During World War II, cooperation continued through operations that saved hundreds of Allied airmen over Serbian territory, further strengthening the historical bond. Modern Cooperation While relations have experienced both positive and challenging periods throughout the last century, cooperation between Serbia and the United States remains significant today. American companies are active investors in Serbia, particularly in technology, services, manufacturing, and innovation sectors. The United States is also an important partner in education, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange programs. Recent cooperation has extended to international projects such as EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, where the United States has officially confirmed its participation, further demonstrating ongoing engagement between the two countries. More Than Diplomacy According to the exhibition’s curators, the story of Serbian-American relations is ultimately a story about people. Scientists, athletes, artists, entrepreneurs, and ordinary citizens have all played a role in building bridges between the two countries over the past century and a half. For visitors, the exhibition serves as a reminder that diplomacy is not only about governments and agreements, but also about shared experiences, cultural exchange, and the connections that develop between nations over time. As Serbia and the United States mark 145 years of official relations, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the past while looking toward future cooperation and partnership. “The story of Serbia and America is not only written in diplomatic documents, but also in generations of people who helped connect two nations across an ocean.” Post navigation Serbia and North Macedonia: A Shared History, Strong Ties, and a Common Future
